Resistance to ketonuria and ketosis in obese subjects

H. Mohammadiha 1

1 From the Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Medicine, University of Teheran, Teheran, Iran

Eighteen obese subjects and 25 nonobese controls have been under observation during 20 days in Ramezan (fasting time). Urine and blood were examined for ketone bodies (diacetic acid, beta-hydroxy butyric acid, and acetone). It was found that the normal controls developed ketosis after 3-6 days and beta-hydroxy butyric and diacetic acids were found in their urine, whereas the obese group did not show ketosis even after 20 days. Eating habit, kind of diet and their energy expenditures were rather similar in both groups.
