1 From the School of Public Health, University of Tehran, Tehran, Iran
Calorie and protein intake of 286 preschool age children in low income families in Tehran was evaluated by the use of the direct weighing method for 3 consecutive days. It was shown that 37% of the children received adequate calories and protein. Of the remaining children 62% were deficient in calories and only 15% were deficient in protein. Protein deficiency was strongly associated with deficiency of calories (r = 0.67 and P < 0.01). Variation in dietary quantity and quality was substantial and sulfur amino acids were most limiting in most of the diets of the children.
