Cyclic AMP in digestive physiology

Robert A. Levine M.D.1

1 From the Department of Medicine, State University Hospital, Upstate Medical Center, 750 East Adams Street, Syracuse, N.Y. 13210

The list of gastrointestinal responses to cAMP is rapidly growing, as cAMP appears to play a key regulatory role in intestinal electrolyte and fluid secretion, but its physiologic role in bile, pancreatic, and gastric secretion is less firmly established. There is evidence for a direct secretory effect of cAMP in isolated amphibian gastric mucosa, but in the in vivo mammalian stomach, gastric secretion may be independent of changes in intra- or extracellular cAMP concentration.
