Despite the various clinical, epidemiological, and experimental evidence indicating the increased susceptibility of protein-deficient persons to infection, the precise mechanism underlying this is not clearly known. The status of nonspecific protective substances in the body's defense mechanism against invading microbes is not established in human protein deficiency, namely, kwashiorkor. The present study using E. coli and plate count has clearly indicated that these factors are depressed in protein deficiency.
