In summary, the Title VII Nutrition Program presents a considerable challenge to the Administration on Aging and designated State Agencies on Aging. It is a program that can achieve considerable impact in a service area in great need among the elderly. We estimate that the $100 million requested by the President for the program for FY 1973 would provide approximately 250,000 meals/day, 5 days a week when fully operational. This estimate is based on the best cost information available as a result of the Title IV research and demonstration effort mentioned earlier. However, even if we are able to achieve this goal, the need for nutrition services will remain great, for the number of elderly in need of regular nutrition services far exceeds the maximum that we will be able to serve in FY 1973.
