Progressive protein undernutrition and intestinal enzyme activities in monkeys

Vijay Kumar M.D.1 and H. Peter Chase M.D.1

1 From the Pediatric Department and the B. F. Stolinsky Laboratories, University of Colorado Medical Center, Denver, Colorado 80220

Protein deprivation in the monkey has been shown to result in progressive loss of body weight, reduction of serum proteins, and generalized body edema. Marked villus atrophy of the intestinal mucosa was present after 18 weeks of protein deprivation. Intestinal mucosal disaccharidase, dipeptide hydrolase, and alkaline phosphatase activities were found to be reduced in the protein-deprived monkeys.
