The general conclusion of the meeting was that because of a variety of factors, nutrient in-takes are likely to be low in the elderly. Though some of them may produce clinical signs, many will be detectable biochemically. The application of the biochemical methods is limited, first by laboratory facilities and second, by inadequate methods, except for ascorbic acid and thiamine. The nutrient needs of the elderly are not clearly understood and need further work.
