Intestinal Folate Conjugase Activity in Tropical Sprue

Duodenal aspirates obtained from 25 Haitian subjects have been tested for the presence of folate conjugase activity by determining their capacity to release monoglutamate folate activity from egg yolk, a natural source of polyglutamate activity. Evidence of conjugase activity was detected in aspirates from 5 of 10 patients with tropical sprue and from 7 of 15 other subjects. Whether this enzyme is present in sufficient quantity in the succus entericus to deconjugate a physiologically significant quantity of dietary polyglutamate folate activity is uncertain.
